History Of Shelton

The historic community of Shelton was first settled in 1639 and was included as a part of the town of Stratford. Finally in 1789 the community was incorporated as Huntington. A few years later, in 1882, the town was renamed Shelton. Historically, the town's rich natural resources have allowed the townspeople to harness the abundant waterpower available by way of the Housatonic River dam and another local canal. The town's prime location and great natural resources have allowed the town to stand as a production center for everything from pianos to pins.
